This is a demonstration of the landscaping abilities of the HP Deskjet. Geopublish can print sideways also but it's slow. By using two or more TEXT PRINT files and switching between two printer drivers it's possible to print multiple columns sideways on the Deskjet; and doing so using the printer internal fonts! HP provides only two fonts for this purpose, Courier and Letter Gothic. The DJ Plus needs the HP22707L cartridge to access Letter Gothic. The original Deskjet needs the HP22707K to print landscape and the HP22707L to access Letter Gothic. The 'L' cartridge also adds 24 point typesize to the fonts. This feature is supported by the Text Print files in this archive.
@GENERAL INFORMATION
Besides three document files in this archive there are two Text Print files and two printer drivers. The file called LANDRIGHT will print on the right side of the paper. The one called LANDLEFT will print on the left side. The printer driver called LMX-850 NF is used with the Text Print file LANDRIGHT. The driver called LMX-850 F is used with the Text Print file LANDLEFT. The drivers are identical except the LMX-850 NF driver does not output a FORMFEED code. This causes the printer to wait while the other page to be printed (on the left side of the paper) is sent. Switch to the LMX-850 F driver before outputting the last geowrite page. This saves having to manually punch the FormFeed button on the printer.
@NOTE:
If you don't mind punching the FF (formfeed) button after sending the last column of data, you can get by without switching printer drivers. Just use the LMX-850 NF driver.
The printer will not print until it sees a 0C (12-form feed), a 1B 45 (27,69-reset), or a page orientation command.
If the geowrite page is too long it will cause the printer to eject the paper and finsh printing on another sheet.

If you have a desk accessory to change printer drivers from within an application, such as "

" by

, all the manipulations required to print columns in landscape mode can be done without exiting the document. There may be an application similar to Change Printer on Q-LINK.
@MARGINS
Due to mechanical limitations of the printer there will always be a half inch margin on the left side of the printed document and quarter inch margins at the top and bottom. The left hand margin of the leftmost column is the amount set in the geowrite document

the half inch default. The left hand margin of the rightmost document(s) is the amount set by geowrite, plus the default half inch,
@PLUS
the amount entered in the TEXT PRINT file "LANDRIGHT". The amount entered in the Text Print file provides the large right hand shift for printing columns. To position the print head for printing subsequent columns after the first one is printed, a cursor escape code command is sent. It sets the print head at ROW 0, COLUMN 0. Follow this system for setting up your own "columnar" Text Print files.
@LETTER GOTHIC
Letter Gothic will have to be accessed using the font select button on the printer. The SETUP and FONT buffers in Text Print are not large enough to hold the minimum number of escape codes necessary to access Letter Gothic. Printer Reset, Landscape, Margin Offset, Print Quality and Font Selection are the codes that have to be sent. There isn't room for everything. Courier works through software control because it's not necessary to send the font codes. Courier is the printer default. Select the desired pitch of Letter Gothic with the printer font switch first, then start printing the document. It's possible to use a third Text Print file to send
all the initialization codes by first sending a blank geowrite document; then use a
all the initialization codes by first sending a blank geowrite document; then use a modified LANDRIGHT file (with
the Letter Gothic codes in the Font area- no SETUP codes!) to send the first real document.
@24 POINT TYPE
The escape codes to access the 24 point type of the Landscape cartridge is in the OUTLINE area of the Text Print file. Select outline in the Style pulldown menu in Geowrite for the text to be printed in 24 point. It works the same way as
@bold
italic
. Unfortunately, 24 point in the landscape cartridge
works in landscape, not portrait.
@NOTE:
The escape codes for accessing the large fonts in HPs' 15/30 point headline cartridges can be entered in the OUTLINE area of the portrait printing Text Print files.
Use the Letter Gothic printer font to print the "
@DOC GOTHIC
" file. Use the Courier printer font to print the "
@DOC COURIER
" file. The Gothic file uses the standard 1
inch geowrite default margins. The Courier file uses the full page wide
inch default margins.
@ONE MORE THING...
The two printer drivers LMX-850 NF and LMX-850 F are the same as the FX-850 LM driver uploaded to Q-LINK earlier. The only difference is the formfeed that has been nulled out in the LMX-850 NF driver. These drivers can be used to print DRAFT and LETTER QUALITY (ASCII) with the HP Deskjet but
graphics (unless the HP Epson Emulator is used-HP22707F DJ Plus; HP22706F DJ).
HP recommends using 24lb, 25% rag content paper for best print quality. It really does make a difference in the type quality. This type of paper is more expensive than regular bond. It's not necessary to use it for general printing (I do suggest using it when printing Graphics). Whatever the paper used, avoid the cheapest. Viking copier paper produces excellent results. Hammermill probably does too, although I haven't tried it. Don't use the coated "inkjet" paper.
